Equipment

  • Large Pot: This is where the magic happens!
  • Wooden Spoon: For stirring everything together.
  • Knife and Cutting Board: To chop up veggies and ham.
  • Measuring Cups: To get the right amounts.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried split peas
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ham bone or 2 cups diced ham
  • 8 cups chicken broth or water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Rinse the split peas in cold water.
  • Heat oil in the pot and sauté onions, carrots, celery, and garlic until soft.
  • Add peas, ham bone, and broth to the pot. Bring it to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, cover, and let it simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the ham bone, then season with salt and pepper.

Notes

I always give the soup a good stir every now and then to keep it from sticking.
It's great to make a big batch because flavors get better the next day. 🌟
You can freeze leftovers, so it’s an easy meal for later.
Feel free to add other herbs like thyme for extra flavor. Enjoy! 😋
